Guedel airways, also called oropharyngeal airways (OPAs), are a critical item for advanced trauma and medical response. They hold the tongue away from the posterior pharyngeal wall to keep the upper airway clear of obstruction in an unconscious patient without a gag reflex.
Colour-coded sizing
Each OPA is sized by its length in centimetres, measured from the corner of the patient's mouth to the angle of the jaw. Colour-coded bite blocks let you identify the right size at a glance in a time-critical setting.
- Paediatric sizes: 00, 0, 1, 2, 3
- Adult sizes: 4, 5, 6
Adult OPA sizes and selection
Size 4 (around 9 cm) is the most common fit for an average adult, with size 5 used for larger adults and size 6 reserved for very large adults. Always confirm fit against the individual patient before insertion, as an incorrectly sized airway can worsen obstruction.
