A Life On The Line is the memoir of Darren Hodge, a MICA flight paramedic with Ambulance Victoria. Open and honest, the book recounts what it feels like to be on the end of a winch line, plucking people from imminent danger, with some laughs along the way.

Darren's career has spanned more than 25 years. After qualifying as a paramedic, he was offered intensive care training (MICA), a role he found challenging and highly rewarding. Teaching at ambulance colleges uncovered a passion for helping new paramedics master their craft, work he continues today.

After 15 years on road, Darren achieved his career goal of joining Air Ambulance Victoria, working on both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He describes the role as extreme, attending the sickest and most seriously injured patients. The job has taken him into the waters of Bass Strait, deep Victorian bush and the highest snow-covered mountains, all to help a person in need.
